Arizona's First District

Arizona's first congressional district has 760,000 people and is comprised of parts of Phoenix and all of Scottsdale as well as the Tonto National Forest.

The three biggest ethnic demographics in AZ-1 are:
1. White (47%)
2. Native (21.3%)
3. Hispanic (12.6%)

AZ-1 has a lower foreign-born population than the national average at 6% to the national average of 13%.

Arizona's first district is notable for encompassing parts of the Greater Phoenix area, primarily Scottsdale. Scottsdale is home to 240,000 of the first district residents. This city is home to the Mayo Clinic making it a destination for healthcare workers. Primary employment in Scottsdale is in the Health sector as well as finance and investing.  Because of this constituency Representative Schweikert focuses much of his policy on medical field-related bills and business-related bills.

Arizona's first district is the Wealthiest district in Arizona, it has considerably higher rates of employment, income, and lower rates of poverty than the Arizona average. This is due to the large corporations and businesses that exist in this district as opposed to other Arizonan districts. The importance of wealth for this district also has a significant impact on what kinds of bills Schweikert supports. Unlike many representatives, Schweikert has a very narrow focus on the sorts of bills he supports which directly relates to his background and the constituency he represents.

Though in recent history Arizona as a whole has been considered a red state, in the most recent election Arizona flipped to blue. A general trend in Arizona has been an increase in competitiveness especially in Arizona's first district which is widely regarded as one of the most flippable seats in the country.
